Any interest interest Liverpool might have had in Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt has been knocked, if reports from Spain are to be believed.
The Reds are one of the clubs who have been reportedly looking at the 19-year-old as a defensive option ahead of a potential summer move.
Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes that de Ligt would be an ‘incredible addition’ to Jurgen Klopp’s squad.
But Spanish reports suggest the defender has now agreed figures on a deal with Barcelona.
Barca have already raided Ajax for midfielder Frenkie de Jong in a £67million deal and it appears they are closing in on the centre-back who has enjoyed a superb season in Amsterdam.
According to Oriol Domenech, talking on the Club de la Mitjanit programme on Esport 3, the numbers are in place to get the done deal.
Domenech has claimed that De Ligt’s agent Mino Raiola is in talks with Barcelona representatives in Monaco as they look to thrash out the finer details of the transfer.
Ajax look set to win a Dutch domestic double, despite their Champions League heartbreak after losing to Tottenham in the semi-finals and de Ligt spoke to the media after a 4-1 win against Utrecht on Sunday.
“I don’t know yet. There have been conversations, but there is still no agreement,” De Ligt told journalists at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes that de Ligt would be an ‘incredible addition’ to Jurgen Klopp’s squad although he would be worried about the impact it has on Joe Gomez.
“What a player (De Ligt) is. (But) are we forgetting how good Gomez was next to Van Dijk earlier in the season? They’d be kicking him in the teeth if they go and sign De Ligt,” Murphy said.
“He’d be incredible. Can you imagine (De Ligt and Van Dijk)? My god.”
