The initial concern about the situation of the Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk was confirmed: the examinations made after Saturday’s game with Everton revealed that the player suffered a ligament injury in his right knee.

In a statement on Sunday, the English club said Van Dijk would be operated on, starting rehabilitation immediately. Liverpool does not cite recovery time, but cases like this tend to leave players off the pitch for up to eight months.

“After the surgery, Van Dijk will start the rehabilitation program with the club’s medical team to enable him to recover to full fitness as soon as possible,” says an excerpt from the Liverpool note.
